09:10–09:55 HR in the lead - operationalising governance reform
The current financial crisis and economic downturn is not wasted on regulators and policy makers who stand in line to propose governance reforms to the world of business. The G20 attempt to reign in bonus excesses and several policy makers in Europe follow suit. Some of them play a lonely game, others seek EU-consensus. One thing is sure, the changes will lead to increasing demands on supervisory and executive management to align compensation systems with austerity design principles currently in fashion. This in turn will mean that expectations of both internal and external HR professionals will increase to provide leadership in the domain of compensation and benefits, taking into account the many opposing and sometimes conflicting forces of a complex labour market. This session will call HR to action and give some pointers on what the business really needs from HR.
Pauline van der Meer Mohr, Managing Partner, Amstelbridge

Presentation and case study on different patterns to manage employees mobility. Many international assignment policies have been reviewed in the last months due to cost optimization, but appetite for sending employees on assignments shows no sign of abating. Third-country nationals and localization are on the rise and this forces companies into a more global thinking and innovative ideas. What are the issues and challenges faced by companies when designing, communicating and monitoring pension and benefits programmes for expatriates? What practical approaches and solutions can help your programme deliver to the needs of both the assignee and the business?

We will also give you an update on compensation and benefits developments and the issues that companies face in the area of talent management. We will feature Saudi Arabia as a high potential economy and your possible expansion destination. Compensation management in EMEA - trends and themes from our 2009 survey*
In this session, we present our findings from the new EMEA compensation management survey. In any economic climate organisations need to effectively manage what is probably their greatest expense: staff compensation. In today’s challenging economic times, there is even greater scrutiny on the control of this investment and greater expectation that organisations get better value for money. Mercer's survey focuses on systems and factors that determine optimal compensation governance in EMEA and is key for benchmark data on market compensation practices and a guide for implementing high-value change. Find out if your practices are in line with our international participants.
David Wreford, EMEA Co-sourcing Product Leader, Mercer
Executive remuneration: corporate governance and performance measurement
Executive remuneration has been on the news agenda daily in Europe. While many companies have had to increasingly justify their executive pay practices, some organizations have actually had to face shareholders' revolts over executive compensation practices. In response, governments in Europe are introducing additional legislation aimed at moderating executive pay levels. Is your remuneration programme responsible and defensible, as well as aligned with your business strategy?

In this session, we look at corporate governance and performance measurement in the light of recent events. We present up-to-the-minute case study examples of what companies are doing to develop innovative executive compensation structures, drawing on our experience as the advisers to a number of major European companies.
Piia Pilv, Head of European Centre of Excellence for Executive Remuneration, Mercer
Lex Verweij, Benelux HC Leader, Mercer
Flexible benefits
Interactive session and debate facilitated by Mercer experts. In this session, we present our findings from the 2009 global survey on employee choice. We will discuss how does the current crisis impact employers' benefits strategy. Does the formula cutting costs = cutting benefits make sense? What options do exist for employers? Making more out of less? We will also look on the challenges for flexible benefits in an international environment.
Rolf Misterek, Principal, Retirement Risk and Finance (RRF), Mercer
Maeve McCumiskey, Benelux IPS Market Leader, Mercer
Global levelling
Current company practices and approaches to organising individual accountabilities and responsibilities may not be sufficient to survive in today's competitive environment. Increasing business demands and limited resources require an efficient, flexible and transparent job levelling approach that is easy to apply consistently across the globe. Such global job levelling can be used as a central HR management tool to control key HR processes, such as staffing, recruiting, rewards and talent management, more effectively.

A company's sustainable and profitable growth depends on the active management and allocation of accountabilities, which are aligned directly to the company's business strategy, rather than its reactive organisation. Mercer's proprietary work value measurement system IPE (International Position Evaluation) provides an innovative solution to job levelling as a basis for integrated HR management. In this session, we compare different approaches and methodologies to develop a global job levelling structure with Mercer IPE. Drawing on a client's experience, we provide an overview of how this organisation developed its global level structure using Mercer IPE and how it has applied it globally.

Compensation & benefits trends in Africa
The current economic crisis has brought its own challenges to this already difficult region. What are they and do they mean that the new era of private enterprise growth in Africa be cut short? How can companies be better prepared to benefit, rather than lose out, from the profound changes in this complex environment?

Reliable HR information for this region is difficult to find and in this session, we take a look at the relationship between remuneration and cost and quality of living. We also consider the current trends in benefits in Sub-Saharan Africa and those likely to emerge in the near future. We draw on real client experiences and look at tools and frameworks to help sponsors consider their options, take informed decisions and work towards their desired outcomes.

14:30–15:00 HR outlook 2010
Global markets appear to be transforming through creative destruction. The “destruction” part is most visible today, and it’s painful to watch. But now is the time to focus on the “creative” part – particularly through the lens of human resources. Politicians, employers, and individuals are all struggling with how to optimise financial capital. But this disruptive economy provides a golden opportunity to optimise how we deploy human capital as well. Employers who embrace and adopt change will face 2010 with a workforce ready to succeed in a radically new global market.
