Dr. Stephen Rhinesmith
Senior Partner, Oliver Wyman
Dr. Stephen H. Rhinesmith is a Senior Partner at Oliver Wyman. He is a co-author with David Dotlich and Peter Cairo of the recently released book Head, Heart & Guts: How the World's Best Companies Develop Complete Leaders, published by Jossey-Bass in 2006. Dr. Rhinesmith is one of the world's leading experts on global leadership and global human resource development. As an executive, consultant, diplomat, author, and lecturer, he has experience leading and motivating people in more than 60 countries.
Dr. Rhinesmith has been a consultant to many Fortune 100 corporations on globalization and the development of global mind-sets, competencies, and corporate cultures. His book A Manager's Guide to Globalization is frequently used in executive development programs to help managers gain a more global perspective in their work. He is currently consulting with companies on the development of leadership pipelines that will ensure the talent necessary for future global competitiveness.
Stephen Rhinesmith brings to his consulting practice 20 years of senior international management experience, 15 of which were as President of three different service organizations: the AFS International Student Exchange Program, Holland America Cruise Line Inc., and Moran, Stahl & Boyer, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in cross-cultural training and multicultural team building.
In addition to his private-sector experience, Dr. Rhinesmith served for 10 years as a senior organization development consultant to the World Bank. During 1986-87, he was President Reagan's Coordinator for US-Soviet Exchanges. In this position, he held diplomatic rank of US Ambassador and was responsible for reinitiating cultural, educational, and citizen contacts between the United States and the Soviet Union. He was also the founding Chairman of the Organizational Sociology Department at Moscow State University, which helps Russian students and managers develop the mindsets and skills necessary to work in a democratic, free-market society.
In 1994 Dr. Rhinesmith served as Chairman of the American Society for Training and Development, the leading professional training association in the United States, with 75,000 members. He is the 1997 recipient of ASTD's highest award, the Gordon M. Bliss Memorial Award, given for lifetime contribution to the training and development profession and outstanding service to the world community. Dr. Rhinesmith has been listed in Who's Who in America for the last 25 years and is in the current edition of Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Rhinesmith received his BA from Wesleyan University in 1965, and his MA and PhD in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966 and 1972, respectively. He and his family reside in Chatham, Massachusetts.
